We train you not only to become a skilled jazz double bassist, but also give the skills to become an autonomous musician with the tools to continuously develop yourself. Broaden your musical horizons at Codarts and get ready for a career in the music world. Rotterdam, with its vibrant music scene, offers the perfect setting for this!

Why study double bass at Codarts?

Codarts offers a unique jazz double bass main subject that focuses on both traditional and modern jazz music. As a student you learn from teachers who each represent their own musical world and genre.

Stefan Lievestro emphasises modern and contemporary jazz music rooted in tradition. He also boasts an enormous vocabulary of musical technical exercises.

Marius Beets teaches bass lines and solos from a historical perspective. He also pays attention to the harmonic aspect and teaches you how to play by ear.

Codarts believes in developing your unique musical voice and equipping you with the skills to continuously improve yourself. We value initiative and encourage you to find your own path within jazz music.

Programme

Your main subject lessons focus on technical skills, repertoire knowledge and exercises to improve your double bass playing technique. Our goal is to help you translate your musical vision to your instrument.

Through theory classes, we equip you with the musical and theoretical development, teaching you solfeggio and how to analyse music by ear.

Codarts also offers you the opportunity to take group lessons in bass guitar and classical string lessons. This gives you a broad musical experience and enriches your skills and knowledge. We make sure our students are well prepared for a career in music, whether as a performing musician, teacher or composer.

One of most the exciting aspects of the Codarts jazz double bass curriculum is the opportunity to immediately practice your acquired knowledge in the various ensembles. In the first three years of your studies, we organise these ensembles for students.

Some notable alumni include: Alessandro Fongaro, Patricia Mancheño, Thomas Pol and Mattheus Nicolaiewsky.

In the third year we encourage you to create your own musical project. This will strengthen your mastery of the jazz tradition and challenge you to experiment with contemporary jazz music. You also have the opportunity to perform at the annual Brand New Jazz Festival.

Our goal is to help you become a self-sufficient musician who will thrive in the music world. As a musician, you are never finished learning. After four years at Codarts you will be able to continue to develop and perfect your skills without constant guidance. We want you to become your own 'teacher', capable of learning new music styles, improving yourself and being creative in your musical expressions.

Masterclasses and workshops

The Double Bass and Bass Guitar main subjects also organise a number of other educational activities, such as studio days and a special 'bonding day' between teachers and students.

We value our masterclasses and collaborations with well-known artists and teachers. These hands-on sessions allow you to learn from the best and build your network in the music industry.
