Why study jazz trumpet at Codarts?

At Codarts we believe in cultivating your unique musical voice.

Our teaching team is the core of our success. Composed of veteran musicians such as Jarmo Hoogendijk, Wim Both and Jan van Duikeren - seasoned artists who have been working together for almost 40 years – our teachers offer a solid foundation for your musical development. Each teacher has a unique specialty.

Our teachers

Jarmo made a name for himself playing with the Ben van den Dungen/Jarmo Hoogendijk Quintet (four albums) and Nueva Manteca (ten albums). He learned all the ins and outs of the profession and acquired his impressive jazz repertoire 'first-hand' by collaborating with various legendary musicians. In his classes, Jarmo focuses on timing, phrasing and articulation and encourages his students to search for already internalised musical concepts while singing and translate these to the trumpet. This technique also hones your hearing and ear for music.

Wim has been one of the most sought-after 'lead trumpeters' for decades. There are very few Dutch pop hits without the signature mark of Wim's lead trumpet performance. In addition, he was part of the best major jazz orchestras for many years (including WDR big band, the Metropole Orchestra and the Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw). Wim will teach you to interpret various trumpet parts 'prima vista' and help you to become a good section wind player who can play in any orchestra.

Last but not least, in addition to his work as a soloist and composer, Jan specialises in playing in wind sections and creating arrangements. Thanks to his versatile musical skills, he is a an internationally renowned sideman and guest soloist. While still a student at Codarts, Jan won the very first edition of the Erasmus Jazz Prize in 1996. In 2022, his ballad album 'Short Stories' garnered him both the Edison Jury Prize and the Edison Audience Award.

Programme

Our jazz trumpet curriculum emphasises the development of your versatility as a musician. You will learn how to quickly to perform in a variety of musical settings. The ability to step on stage at a moment's notice and deliver an effortless performance, regardless of the circumstances, is the ultimate proof of professional competence.

To prepare you for this flexibility, we focus on improvisation, developing a keen musical ear and teaching you tonal functional harmony. Learn to effortlessly play in different tempi and various grooves and feel comfortable in all twelve keys.

We also spend a lot of time honing your technical skills, for example by practicing embouchure. You will also learn to read music, so you can play the right notes and give each note the correct interpretation. This will help you to immediately connect with other musicians and quickly respond to changing keys or musical variations. These foundations are invaluable to your future success as a musician.

The curriculum also includes practical lessons in section playing and studio sessions, offering you classes with Wim Both to specialise as a 'lead' trumpet player.

In the third year we encourage you to create your own musical project. This will strengthen your mastery of the jazz tradition and challenge you to experiment with contemporary jazz music. You also have the opportunity to perform at the annual Brand New Jazz Festival.

Our goal is to help you become a self-sufficient musician who will thrive in the music world. As a musician, you are never finished learning. After four years at Codarts you will be able to continue to develop and perfect your skills without constant guidance. We want you to become your own 'teacher', capable of learning new music styles, improving yourself and being creative in your musical expressions.
