The Pop Keyboard main subject at Codarts offers an inspiring learning environment that encourages students to broaden their musical horizons and collaborate with other main subjects or departments at Codarts. The curriculum guarantees a comprehensive learning experience that emphasises both technical skills and creativity, preparing you for a career in the modern music industry.
Our close ties with the Jazz and World Music departments in the same building encourages students to mix and match across different genres and styles.
Why study Pop Keyboards at Codarts?
At Codarts, we embrace a unique combination of technique and artistic diversity. We encourage you to look beyond the traditional boundaries of your field. Enrich your learning experience by collaborating with students from the Jazz and World Music departments. Our teaching team, which includes Ronald Kool, Elise Polman, Edwin Beekmans, Rick Linzel, Ivo Schols and Berthil Busstra, shares their wealth of expertise and music industry experience to give a complete picture of the profession.
Our extensive network equips you with valuable contacts in the music world. Graduates of the main subject Pop Keyboard at Codarts work as session musicians, producers, songwriters, and teachers. Our alumni, such as Wouter Heeren (Chef's Special) and Julius van Eijs (Froukje, and more), contribute to our reputation and recognition, as they inspire and guide the next generation of musicians.
Programme
The Pop Keyboard curriculum at Codarts is dynamic and constantly evolving to remain current and relevant. Our teaching methods encompass piano technique, practical applications, and collaboration with other musicians.
You start with essential piano techniques and gradually move on to more complex applications, such as playing jazz standards and pop songs with a focus on harmonic knowledge and flexibility. You learn how to use timing and rhythm, while working with other artists to become familiar with different musical settings and develop your own musical voice.
Collaborations and our facilities
In addition to the regular curriculum, Codarts also offers hands-on learning through various projects. An example is the Codarts Pop Orchestra, a collaboration of various music departments, where you get the chance to explore a wide range of pop music styles and gain performance experience. And with our (international) exchange programmes you can immerse yourself in different cultures and musical traditions.
The Codarts facilities include a state-of-the-art studio and houses an extensive collection of keyboard instruments to give you access to all the tools you need to achieve your creative vision.
Ronald Kool, Pop Keyboard main subject teacher: “Seize the opportunity to explore as many different things as possible during your study.”
