Codarts Master Screen Scoring
Codarts – Master in Screen Scoring
As a student in the Master in Screen Scoring programme at Codarts, you will learn the art of writing and composing scores for films and other media. By working on real-life projects under the guidance of experts in the field, our Master programme focuses on developing both your musical and technical skills. Collaborate directly with filmmakers in a hands-on learning experience that equips you with the professional skills for a career in music.
Why study Screen Scoring at Codarts?
At Codarts we believe that practice makes perfect. From your very first day as a student, you will work on real projects. Through this interactive learning experience, you continuously explore, learn and apply new professional skills. Last year, our master students composed scores for fifteen student films and animations.
You start by developing a concept that forms the blueprint for what your musical score will express. In meetings with directors and other clients you learn how to communicate about film music and work in partnership with other stakeholders. The programme also focuses on the psychological aspects of artistic collaborations.
The programme
The programme combines practical learning with comprehensive theoretical knowledge. In the core subject classes, you work on compositions and learn to orchestrate for film music. The programme also includes courses on film history and art philosophy. You can tailor your learning experience and further hone your skills by choosing electives from the wide range of courses offered by the Conservatory.
Our programme offers a variety of class types and learning tools to teach you how to translate your artistic concept into acoustic or electronic music and sounds. Learn how to use classic synthesizers with weekly individual lessons and study in a real film sound studio where you mix and master your music in 5.1 surround sound like a pro. Or participate in projects like OPUS 111 to practice writing scores for live ensembles. These hands-on experiences allow you to develop the musical finesse to give your music a unique ‘voice’ in a film or production.
Artistic research
In addition to the practice-based programme, you also work on a two-year long artistic research project. This project is an opportunity to immerse yourself in a topic of your own interest and relevance to your film music practice; for example, the harmonic structures of a John Williams score or an in-depth analysis of the sounds of Hildur Guonadóttir. Over the course of three academic research rounds, you will research and write a paper that other students can consult. In addition to acquiring solid research and writing skills, you develop specialised knowledge that will add depth to your compositions.
Masterclasses and collaborations
This master programme is the perfect opportunity to participate in projects such as the special International Film Festival Rotterdam, where ensembles with our Classical Musical students perform film music composed by our Screen Scoring students. Or participate in the Musicalmakers project and collaborate with writers from Muziektheater.
We also host regular masterclasses with renowned composers and artists. Learn from the best in the business through these hands-on, interactive sessions and start building your network in the music industry.
Codarts’ holistic 'Team Around the Artist' approach ensures broad support for our students, while our focus on the quality of professional working relationships creates an atmosphere of pride and community.
Our Master in Screen Scoring prepares you for a professional career as an independent composer and gives you the tools to continue to learn and further develop your skills in the dynamic world of film music.
