Dr. Janine Stubbe, professor of Performing Arts Medicine at Codarts since 2014, has been appointed endowed professor of Arts & Well-being at Erasmus University Rotterdam.

Janine Stubbe appointed endowed professor of Arts & Well-being at Erasmus University Rotterdam

This research focuses on strengthening the connection between performing arts, dance therapy, music therapy, health, and well-being.

Stubbe will hold this special professorship of Arts and Wellbeing with a focus on Arts for Well-being and Healthy Artists at the Erasmus School of History, Culture and Communication in addition to her professorship at Codarts.

Janine Stubbe: “Art can play a powerful role in improving public health. It can evoke emotions, create connection and support disease processes. Rotterdam is a perfect testing ground for this: its diversity, challenges and creativity within the city offer endless possibilities. With this new endowed chair, I want to show how art, science and the health domain reinforce each other, and how this combination can make a difference for both individuals and communities. In doing so, I want to underline how essential art is for a healthy and connected society.”

The Performing Arts Medicine professorship at Codarts will continue under Stubbe's leadership under the name Arts & Well-being. This transition not only maintains the focus on the health of performing artists but also integrates the essential work of Dr. Rosemarie Samaritter and other researchers within the Codarts Master of Arts Therapies.

The renewed professorship includes two research lines:

  • Healthy Artist: Addressing the sustainable employability and health of performing artists, with themes such as injury prevention, mental resilience, and performance anxiety.

  • Arts for Well-being: Exploring how performing arts and creative therapies, such as dance and music therapy, contribute to the health and well-being of diverse populations, including individuals with personality disorders and neurodegenerative conditions like Korsakov and Parkinson's disease.
