Sun-Mi Hong steps up as permanent jazz drums teacher at Codarts

We are excited to announce that Sun-Mi Hong is joining Codarts as a main subject teacher in our jazz department. Having been a guest teacher since 2022, Sun-Mi will now officially become a part of our faculty starting this month.

Sun-Mi expressed her excitement about the new role: "I’m so happy to be part of the team, especially alongside Joost Patocka and Mark Schilders."

Award-winning drummer and versatile bandleader 

The South Korean drummer is no stranger to the jazz world. She has won prestigious awards, including the Edison Award in the National category for her album ‘A Self-Strewn Portrait’ and the SENA Dutch Jazz Competition. Her ensemble, the Sun-Mi Hong Quintet, explores the rich tradition of post-bop jazz while collaborating with international talents she has met in the Netherlands. Additionally, Sun-Mi has shared the stage with renowned jazz musicians such as Benjamin Herman, Yuri Honing, and Tineke Postma. 

Inspiring addition to the jazz department 

Yaşam Hancılar, Head of Jazz at Codarts, shared his enthusiasm about Sun-Mi’s permanent addition to his department: "Sun-Mi is not only an exceptional drummer with a unique voice in the contemporary jazz scene, but also a dedicated educator passionate about fostering the artistic development of the next generation of musicians. As a young female drummer and conservatoire teacher, she brings a fresh and empowering perspective to our community. Our students will surely benefit and be inspired in the coming years by her deep musicality, innovative approach, and international experience."
