Wij bieden je de vaardigheden om, onder professionele begeleiding, je artistieke grenzen te verkennen en te verleggen. We leiden je op in alle genres van het Rotterdams Conservatorium (Klassieke Muziek, Jazz, Pop en Global Music en combinaties daarvan) dankzij een uitgebalanceerd aanbod van topdocenten. Docenten die zelf nog dagelijks inspiratie halen uit hun muzikale bronnen én tegelijk een zakelijke blik op de markt hebben. Docenten die hebben ervaren hoe waardevol een onderzoekende houding en aanpak is. Docenten die hun netwerken open stellen om jou kans te bieden op die éne stageplaats of dat belangrijke podium. Om ons bijzonder veelzijdige aanbod overzichtelijk te presenteren hebben we de Master Muziek onderverdeeld in 3 profielen. Het betreft Performance (voor de uitvoerend musicus), Creative Performer (voor de uitvoerend musicus die ook componeert of maakt) en Composer (voor de componisten). Ongeacht het profiel of het genre (of een combinatie van genres) dat je hebt gekozen is het studieprogramma voor alle studenten gelijk en ziet er als volgt uit.

Hoofdvak
Het hoofdvak is, ook qua studiepunten, het belangrijkste onderdeel van de opleiding. Je sluit het eerste jaar af met een voortgangsexamen. Voor musici is dit een concert; componisten presenteren er hun nieuwe werk. Aan het einde van het tweede jaar vindt je eindexamen plaats. Dan laat je in een openbare uitvoering zien hoe je je, mede dankzij de inzichten die je in je onderzoek hebt opgedaan, als musicus of componist hebt ontwikkeld. Componisten tonen hun kunnen met een openbare presentatie tijdens een compositiefestival. 

Onderzoek
In de Master Muziek is het doen van onderzoek nauw verbonden met jouw hoofdvak. Deze vorm van onderzoek in de kunsten noemen we Artistic Research. Wij verstaan daaronder dat je een  onderzoeksvraag formuleert die uit jouw artistieke praktijk naar voren komt en dat de resultaten van je onderzoek op hun beurt die praktijk zullen verrijken. In het eerste semester volg je een onderzoeksgroep waarin je een onderzoeksopzet maakt. In de volgende semesters bezoek je maandelijkse meetings, begeleid door een onderzoekscoach. Van deze coach krijg je uitgebreide feedback en je presenteert regelmatig de voortgang van je onderzoek, ook aan je hoofdvakdocent. Tot slot presenteer je de eindresultaten van je onderzoek aan een panel. Je resultaten worden onderbouwd met video-opnames en een geschreven verslag met onderzoeksresultaten.

Belangrijke tip: hoewel veel studenten de opleiding Master Muziek succesvol combineren met beroepsmatige activiteiten, is het van belang om met name tijdens het 1^e semester van de opleiding te zorgen voor voldoende tijd om bij de verschillende (onderzoeks)lessen aanwezig te kunnen zijn. Zo creëer je de beste condities voor een geslaagde opleiding.

Ensembles
Ook aan samenspel besteden we in de Master Muziek veel aandacht. Je maakt deel uit van een van de conservatorium-ensembles. Afhankelijk van het genre dat je gekozen hebt kan het gaan om bijvoorbeeld een jazzensemble, het tango-orkest, het symfonieorkest of een van de kamermuziekensembles. Ben je buiten Codarts al werkzaam in een professioneel ensemble, dan bieden we de mogelijkheid om deze ensemble-uren onder te brengen in je Master Muziek portfolio. 

Vrije ruimte
We denken dat je zelf het beste weet wat je nodig hebt om de volgende stap te zetten in je artistieke en persoonlijke ontwikkeling. Daarom krijg je de ruimte om een deel van je curriculum zelf samen te stellen. Aan het einde van ieder jaar presenteer je een portfolio waarin je aandacht besteedt aan de verschillende keuzevakken die we aanbieden en andere activiteiten die je in het kader van je studie hebt ondernomen en wat je daarvan hebt geleerd. Denk daarbij bijvoorbeeld aan een concerttour of een albumopname.
