Caribbean and South American Music.

General Requirements

  • Musicianship, affinity with instrument and repertoire: Applicants must demonstrate a high level of musicianship, including proficiency in repertoire, playing technique, rhythm, harmony (if applicable), intonation (if applicable), improvisation, sight-reading, awareness of musical form and stylistic understanding. They must have the skills to create original ideas on the instrument within Cuban or/and Brazilian music genres. Knowledge of music from other South American cultures is also appreciated.
     
  • Potential for development: Candidates should show potential for growth and skill development;
     
  • Passion, enthusiasm, and cultural context: Applicants should display a deep passion for music, a good understanding of its cultural background, and a clear dedication to their instrument, coupled with the commitment to pursue advanced study
     
  • Biography: A detailed record of personal performance history must be submitted.

 

Research Proposal
Each candidate must submit a detailed plan outlining the research they intend to conduct. This plan should describe how the candidate envisions executing the research and its practical application. An appropriate level of performance in Latin music is essential to carry out the practical aspects of the research.

 

Instrument-Specific Requirements

Piano

  • Ability to play etudes by Czerny or Chopin; choros by Nazareth; dances by Lecuona
  • Comprehensive knowledge of generic Cuban and/or Brazilian piano repertoire
  • Brazilian music: Ability to accompany essential musical genres with an authentic feel
  • Cuban music: Ability to play tumbaos in clave and with an authentic feel
     

Guitar

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Música Popular Brasileira and/or Cuban son
  • Brazilian music: Ability to play pieces by Villa Lobos, Baden Powell, Guinga, Jobim, Edu Lobo, Hermeto Pascoal or comparable artists. Ability to accompany the essential musical genres with an authentic feel
  • Cuban music: Ability to play pieces by Trio Matamoros, Piloto y Vera, Lecuona or comparable artists. Ability to play tumbaos in clave and with an authentic feel
     

Bass

  • Comprehensive knowledge of generic Cuban and/or Brazilian genres and repertoire
  • Brazilian music: Ability to accompany essential musical genres with an authentic feel
  • Cuban music: Ability to play tumbaos in clave and with an authentic feel
     

Vocals

  • Advanced language skills in Spanish, Portuguese, and English, with attention to pronunciation and semantics
  • Proficiency in vocal techniques
  • Comprehensive knowledge of generic Cuban and/or Brazilian genres and repertoire
  • Submission of a recent (within 3 months) vocal/medical report
     

Wind instruments

  • Comprehensive knowledge of generic Cuban and/or Brazilian genres and repertoire
     

Percussion

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Cuban and/or Brazilian repertoire, genres and their respective rhythms
     

Drums

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Cuban and/or Brazilian repertoire, genres and their respective rhythms
  • Advanced proficiency in jazz, rock, funk, and pop music.
